Theater TOL consists of sculptors, musicians, dancers and actors. The company doesn’t play in the usual theater halls, but prefers ‘unusual’ locations: sites like former industrial places, parks, beaches, the banks of a river, a fortress or a castle… In the set up of the performance the authentic features of the site are integrated and used as much as possible. While the preparations are stated in the personal workspace (Theatergarage Borgerhout), the actual show is made at the specific location itself. Therefore Theater TOL uses the features, materials, situations, context and objects in relation to the specific location. Like this every performance is unique.
Theater TOL performed already in Belgium, The Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Poland, Germany and Austria. In summer they play outdoors, in winter at more specific locations, sometimes in cooperation with other artists and other theater companies.
Besides the shows they also initiate interdisciplinary workshops for young artists. The biggest challenge for the actors is the method: short improvisations that trigger spontaneity. Those results offer unlimited options and possibilities.
Theater TOL works in details, poetical, en communicates without dialogue, but in an original and unusual visual language. During the shows the audience gets confronted with themselves, fairytales and objects: ‘Alice in Wonderland’, a crane with fireworks, a bath with a fountain, twinkling lights, a coffee pot as a hat expresses the drinking of a cup of coffee.
The group consists out of a core of 14 people that each production gets chosen by the freelance staff: musicians, designers, stylists, technicians and actors.
